Well now who knew there was such a thing as fresh goji berries?! I mean of course dried fruits come from fresh ones. Duh! But I’d NEVER seen them fresh before, until a few weeks ago! Within days they were gone from the supermarket shelves. I was so sad because I wanted to try out more recipes but I ended up making only this silly one.

So: what are they/where do they come from/what do they taste like?! The latter was my biggest curiosity so I’ll start with this. They have a very subtle taste, almost like watermelon but less sweet. They’re very soft with tiny seeds inside which you can hardly even see or feel. They are packed full of nutrients such as vitamin C and B1, iron, magnesium, potassium and much more. They’re good for our skin, hair, cholesterol, sleep and memory (apparently..!).

Originally from Tibet, they are now cultivated in Europe and Italy as well, and that to me was such a shock to learn! Never would I have seen this coming. But as it happens they are extensively grown both in North and South Italy (Veneto and Calabria), which is great news. I hate buying produce that comes from super far away (think my daily bananas….sigh).

While I wait for the next fresh goji berry season (probably in one year?) I will have to just stare at these colorful photos. C’est la vie.

FRESH GOJI BERRY SMOOTHIE BOWL {vegan + gluten free}

yields 1 bowl
prep time: 10 mins, total time: 10 mins


1-2 frozen bananas
handful fresh goji berries
1 piece of ginger
juice of 1 lemon
dash of cinnamon
1 tbsp chia seeds
1 tbsp grated coconut
1 tbsp raisins



  • Blend together frozen banana, ginger, lemon juice, cinnamon and goji berries (save a few for topping). Add a tiny bit of water if needed.
  • Decorate with chia seeds, coconut, raisins and goji berries.
